I know that the best place to start is with your friends on Facebook/Twitter, so I keep plugging my page/latest mix on there, although, I worry that too much plugging will lead to people getting annoyed and not want to listen.
I’ve recently got in contact with some local DJ’s/Club night promoters and asked them to have a listen, but so far I’ve heard nothing back in terms of feedback which is understandable considering they probably get around 20/30 soundcloud links a day.
All I want to know is what the best method for promotion is? Whats the easiest way to get my name out there with such a small fan base?
Best advice I can give is, go to the clubs/nights you’d like to play at, meet the DJ’s/Promoters, support their efforts, try and strike up some form a familiarity with them, build a friendly relationship basically. If possible try and start your own night, keep it small and work at it, it won’t happen overnight. Despite the influx of social media and general internet promotion, getting involved face to face at a local level will always work best IMHO, besides there is a massive glut (as you say) of online promotion going on by lots of other people, so I would argue the ‘old fashioned’ way will actually stand out.
Best of luck to you.
Cheers.

Here’s a series on Facebook you should check out: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/07/djs-guide-promoting-facebook-getting-fans/
If you’re not using a PAGE, then do that. I also suggest that you post more than just your mixes and events. Post tracks you’re into. Maybe post one every day or every other day. Just find it on Youtube and post it (since it seems it’s all there).
Post blog entries you like from other sites…even articles here you like.
Post non-DJ stuff. Funny videos, conversations, questions. The goal is to ENGAGE. To build a connection and a back-and-forth with your fans.

Too many promoters now seem to look more at the number of “fans” you have over how tight your mix is. I’d tell you to try posting and asking for critique here or on DJ-centric forums. Ask your Facebook friends to post comments.

Read all the stuff I’ve posted and their respective parts. Ask questions here.

MemberThanks for all the advice given. I’ve taken note of everything said and I’m going to try to apply this as much as possible. Hopefully my efforts pay off.

Participantall the above comments are sound pieces of advice.
why not try something a little differnt aswell. thats what i did. my main style of music is dance music. progressive house/electro house/ top 40 remixes. when i was looking to try and get a residancy, i sent out a letter with a mix CD to cloths shops in near by cities.
i ended up playing a 5-6 club set for one of the UK’s largest clothing stores on the busiest shopping day before christams, in one of their city stores. it was different….but it was awsome.
i handed out loads of business cards and free mix cd’s with my name splatted all over them.
never looked back since.
hope you get to where you want to be…good luck (think outside of the box)
