BPM doesn’t matter. Think in terms of ENERGY.

Find and pick tunes that aren’t wild bumpin main prime time bangers. Play some darker shades of it, some b-sides, anything you have that’s darker and thus can “welcome” people in.

    Thanks D-Jam!
I’m trying not to get too caught up in numbers, so I know what you mean. I guess I’ll have to dig around and get acquainted with some different tunes.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Bot all dubstep is hard. There is a lot of different forms. Theres some really great reggae infused stuff thats pretty chilled but sets a good atmosphere. like D-Jam said, theres some great darker stuff too that isn’t too hard but has a different type of energy…perfect for a warmup set.

At an opening id go for UK dubstep not american dubstep… alot of that is more chilled out, not so obnoxious and perhaps it demands a slightly greaster attention span.. Its actually the only kind of dubstep i like listening too.. That skrillex stuff is just to much of everything.

check out getdarkertv.. U will instantly understand what im talking about, check the link. Maybe especially check out distance and darkside my favourite dubstep djs.. They know what they doing.. Id start the evening with stuff like that!

Also, if its a dubstep crowd ur entertaining, u might positivley suprise them with a garage tune.. Know lots of dubstep people “come” from the UK garage tradition.

Hells yeah Distance and Darkside are awesome. Definitely recommend. I wouldn’t really call the heavier stuff “American” dubstep as there are plenty of UK dubstep producers making that type of sound. Also the vast majority of dubstep that doesn’t come from the UK, comes from Canada (Skrillex is the main exception). The sound you’re referring too would be, for lack of a better word, the “oldschool” sound – which is making a comeback in the UK. Many of the pioneering dubstep producers are turning back to the darker as opposed to heavier sound.

Check up a lot of stuff that is at 110 bpm as well. There is some really good 110 moobahton/moobahcore stuff that has a lot of dubstep influence…and works really well so when u switch to 140bpm it brings up the energy levels

why not play some of the older popular tracks as familiarity would tend to fill the floor up earlier? just a thought

Is mombathon halfstep aswell? Never really listened much too the genre.. cause a dubstep track at 140bpm is sorta 70 bpm, because its halfstep.. If it aint the same with moombathon raising the tempo from a 110 track too 140 track to raise the energy, might be counterproductive.. but I have no idea how moobathon works xD

In my experience starting up with a dubstep tune in a club is hard. You have to get the crowd going first before plugging in some serious dubstep.

If I am assigned for the opening, I usually start with instrumentals, slow trance, then build it up with some house… add some comercial songs in the middle (a little seasoning)… then when the crowd starts to get into it that’s when I go for hardcore house and dubstep.

Go to youtube, there’s a full set by Hardwell on Ultra… See how a pro does it

Its a dubstep/dnb/hip hop night and you’ve been asked to stick to dubstep so the question is what tunes to play, not what genre right?

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
DrBlue: I’ve actually got some of Get Darker’s 2011 Dubstep Mix….unfortunately I only bought the more mainstream-ey tracks.

Truth be told, as much as I love all EDM, I’m very fond of the Americanized/Canada-ized mainstream dubstep (Skrillex, Rusko, Liquid Stranger, Excision, etc). While I don’t enjoy the older, darker, more traditional dubstep as much, I still understand and respect the roots of music that’s become so popular over the last few years.
That being said, since I’m not as much of a fan of the older darker stuff, that’s part of the reason why I’m kind of struggling with this.

Alvin: I would’ve opted to start with some older progressive house before moving into some higher energy electro, but for this event, I’ve been asked to stick to dubstep.

Steelo: Yes, some suggestions for some tunes would be great. I’ve been told to stick to dubstep for this show.
