ParticipantI can unequivocally say I do not miss one single thing about working on CDJ’s. I find the workflow from the decks I used to use, to the controllers I use now to be similar, but with software I can cue up the next track quicker without having to fumble around remembering what binder I kept the disc in and hoping it won’t skip.

KeymasterIf they can also be Midi controllers, you could come up with an interesting hybrid style set-up…

Oddity – Thanks this helps out a lot. I guess it just comes down to me being nervous and unsure of this “new Technology”, and just being comfortable with what I know.Phil – I have thought of that very thing because they CDJs can be used as midi controllers, but unfortunately my financial manager said I had to chose one or the other.

Well you could convince her that by using your CDJ’s You don’t need to purchase a controller and no more growing stacks of Cd’s 😀
But for gig’s it a lot easier to just have a controller and laptop instead of carrying laptop mixer and 2 CDJ’s.
I never ever want to gig using only Cd’s if the CDJ’s at the club don’t have USB I bring my controller.
It’s just so much easier to organize music on you computer and no more burning Cd’sMay 10, 2012 at 4:27 pm #1004226Edward Onaci
Participanti traded in my CDJs (which i used with SSL) for a controller. i don’t miss them. it’s just easier to carry a controller from one place to another when i’m required to bring the gear. when i’m at a venue with equipment, however, i use whatever they have, which often means bringing my Serato box and control vinyl/cds instead of my controller… i guess one of my goals is to make transportation as easy as possible!

ParticipantThe only things I found slightly lacking on controllers was the jog wheels and the “rugged” build quality. Things have come a long way now though. Some controllers are built just as tough and have excellend jogwheels. I’m not sure whether the jogs are important to you or not though. I personally won’t completely abandon them as I still generally beatmatch manually most of the time and if I’m not then you never know when something could go wrong with a beatgrid and you have to ride it through the mix. That being said, I made the complete move to digital a while back and then recently got the urge to get back in to scratching so I added 2 vinyl turntables to the mix…guess I watched one too many Native Instruments promo videos!

KeymasterHa ha it happens. We have decks here too and even with me being 99% a digital DJ, that 1% will never go away…

Memberwhat’s up with the CH46 in your profile pic? are you in the marine corps or navy (maybe the army has those now, I guess)
Personally, I love CDJs. I love, love, LOVE PIO CDJS. and the smaller Denons, too…but What I love most of all is that by the end of this year, there will be many Windows tablets quite capable of running VDJ 8, and the ease of use, and convenience of a system like that will simply create a whole new perspective on how the modern DJ or DJ/Producer not only “works” but “LIVES” cause remember you gotta live with this stuff. It needs a big table, and hopefully it’s own room, or at least it’s own area of a room. You need to be able to put it away if you’ll be away from it. I once bought two brand new M447s only to see one broken the next day because my wife’s kid had decided to “show her friends my dj stuff” Things like that happen.
It may sound strange to describe quickly switching back and forth between my production-then DJ-then general computing, all without disconnecting or moving anything, as exciting..but it is.
If you are new to this, you will discount my advise, and say that “I want this stuff” “i’ll use it all the time” “I’ll make a place for it”, but I’ve been dealing with these issues since 1994, and what I’m telling you is from all these years of experience.
CDJs perform better than midi, but CDJs do have prohibitive aspects that may inhibit your opportunities to use them and practice, soooooo…in the long run, midi is better. In todays world, if I were going to mix, I would get a Twitch or vci300.
Want to scratch…as odd as it sounds, considering the automated CF curve, the DJ controllers are the best. -
