You should pick the software you want to use first, then pick a controller, not the other way around.

I second that you should choose the software first.
However if you are totally new, maybe go with the Mixtrack Pro (as it is cheap and really OK) and use Serato DJ Intro. As it is a totally nice software and really easy to learn the basics on.

Have you tried messing around with Virtual DJ home yet? It’s a lot of fun, and gives you a feel for the kind of features you might find useful.

I would get the Mixtrack Pro as the S2 and Twitch are a step up from this.

Invest as little as possible when you first start and with time you will determine what you actually need in your next controller (you will also have the extra money saved to put toward your next controller and can resell the mixtrack Pro easily)

wouldn’t it be more economical if I get traktor s2 now and use it for a long time instead of selling mixtrack pro after 1-2 years and then buying s2 or something similar? s2 is the maximum my budget can go.

no, because I’m more interested in Traktor after reading reviews and comparisons between the two. what do you think?

I really think that you should try both of them sans controller to figure out the features that you want. Besides, it’ll be fun and educational. Furthermore, VDJ makes an excellent backup whenever your controller/wires decides to poop out on you. Which will happen. So it’s worth learning VDJ anyway. You’ll get a feeling for how to use loops and cue points too. And learning how to to traktor (which has the full version as a free download – you just can’t use it for more than 30 min at a time) with just your keyboard than you’ll have a really good understanding of your software before you even start on a controller.

Well… the few months I have been researching digital and hence the software I have come to totally agree with what Phil says in his free guide (which you should get):

Traktor, while a good software, is very complicated, through its momentum it is very hyped and IMHO highly overrated.

VDJ has a bad reputation from prolly old versions of it, I found it to be excellent to DJ, apart from the sample decks (which will be addressed in Version 8 which is already announced, see Phil’s sneak peak) and IMHO is highly underrated.

(I tested VDJ, Traktor and DJ Intro on a borrowed DDJ-Ergo so mapping was good in all cases.)

Itch is really excellent, sadly I could only test it for a week as that was the maximum that my pal would part with his DDJ-S1, but I found that DJ Intro by Serato is very close to what Itch does if you only need 2 Decks and only do standard stuff.

Hence I would really recommend you TEST the software yourself and do not listen to those things posted on the net… On some forums people would call you out if you do not use Traktor and many IMHO buy into it to “join the club” and not because it is what they need.

When it comes to controllers I also have to say, I only tested the S2 for a short time, I would never buy one, as I find it highly overpriced for what it delivers and for its build quality. So you should possibly also test what controller you want AFTER you settled for a software. The mixtrack meanwhile will keep you on track and possibly wont lose much value when you sell it to upgrade.

In my opinion i dont think that S2 is overpriced becouse it comes for me the best program for dj-ing.I would recomend that you first decide your softwear and then choose your gear.

If you choose MIxtrack Pro wich is great for beginers you would need to upgrade traktor (if you are in Europe you will get Traktor LE with Mixtrack Pro, in america it comes with VDJ).You could also buy MIxtrack NOT pro and Native Instruments Audio 2 wich is better soundcard then soundcard in MIxtrack pro.

You said that you will only mix house disco etc.. so for that you would not need jogwheels. I think that Twitch is very god but you are also going to need to buy traktor if you are going to use twitch with it.

So at the end i would buy s2.

    I hope i helped you.
