ParticipantFrom what I am gathering, it looks like Traktor doesn’t have the grouping field; only Serato.
So I might have to just use the comments field.
If I’m wrong, though, I’d love a second opinion.

KeymasterWhy don’t you write them to the Key field? assuming you’re only using MP3s (not M4As). Other than that, most people use “comments”.

ParticipantThat’s a good point, Phil. I was ultimately trying to get it to write the camelot code and the actual key into a field other than comments, so that I could use the comments field to tag the tracks when mixing from Traktor.
I just noticed that there was the ‘comments 2’ box within Traktor. Apparently it is not read from anything other than Traktor.
I can edit the tags using RE3 to show the key in camelot code, and then I have to write the actual key in the comments field. RE3 does write both camelot code and actual key to the grouping field, but that field is useless in Traktor.
So I guess I cannot have my cake and eat it too in this situation w/o using the comments 2 field to show either the actual key or my notations.
Given that the grouping field, I believe, is viewable via Itunes, perhaps I should just use comment2 window for actual key in Traktor and be done with.
I was also somewhat concerned that Traktor would overwrite my tag info using 2.4, and would not be viewable in Windows 7, but thus far (fingers crossed), there has not been an issue. I see it in my folders in my HDD, and when analyzing it with mp3 tag software, it shows that it is using 2.3.
As always, I appreciate your personal replies.
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
BB

Im not sure about Re# but I used mixe din Key and there is an option to automaticallu update the keys in front of any comments you may already have existing in the comment field. Not sure if there is something similar that you can do but I this works great for me.

Thanks, Michael.
I had briefly considered Mixed In Key, but RE3 basically does the same thing for free, without the suggestions on what might go together.
It is a great free piece of software. If Mixed In Key allows this, it might be something to consider.
The problem i have right now is that Traktor overwrites my ID3 tags completely whenever I add a comment to either the comment1 or 2 field. Which basically means I have to start over and spend hours re-tagging the bloody things.
Apparently this is a common issue with Traktor. Why they won’t fix it, I have no idea.
Thanks for your tip, though. Very helpful for future consideration.

ParticipantHi there I use RE3 and Traktor too, what I do is like lawrence suggests, I have RE3 insert the Key before the comment, you will find the setting for this in preferences. If you later want to write in a comment you can always amend it after the key in the comment.

ParticipantGuys…dont use RE3…or MIK…use
http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
Its more accurate i have found for myself using my ear when doing mashups and stuff and u can have it write to Key, or Comments field…It doesnt write in Camelot wheel by itself but u can make it so it does write in the Camelot code if u program it.
I find its WAAYYY less buggy and way faster than RE3…and its free

Use the Comments2 for ur personal comments and keep Comments 1 for your key tagging.
It sounds a little retarded but i use Keyfinder, MediaMonkey, MP3Gain and Itunes before my music even Hits Traktor
MP3Gain first to normalize my tracks that seem quite
Then Keyfinder to Set key in comments Field with Camelot Wheel and Actual Note SignatureKeyfinder to write key into Comments field with camelot wheel and actual note signature
I use MM to tag all my stuff properly, Genre is for what the Main genre of the song is IE Electro, then i use the grouping to define the song, Swing, Funky, Bigroom, Banging, Synths, Vocal, Top40, ClubCheese etc.
I then upload all my properly tagged MP3s into Itunes and have all my smart playlists setup so i have like 14 playlists that are all Electro Genre, but then sorted by subgroup based on grouping.
The smart playlists are great because it auto adds songs that you have set based on certian fields. Then I just go into Traktor and goto my itunes library and add to collection.
Then within Traktor i will start actually building my sets that i am playing that week.

Thanks Hee. I’m sorry I did not get back to you earlier. I have been away from DJ land for a bit now. That other day to day life crap is so distracting. 🙂
I must be a rare person with that program. Funny enough, I took the time to download it after RE3, when RE3 was less stable.
I then used those number codes and programming structure that was posted on this site via the program’s creator.
Unfortunately, I ran into an issue where the program was not stable, and would somehow undo the comments/tags I already had. Which is essentially the same issue I was having with Traktor.
I emailed the program’s creator, and he was kind enough to email back. I have not, as yet, had time to send him more detailed screenshots of the problem.
But I was hopping mad. Not his fault, I’m sure.
Now the Traktor issue…That IS NI’s fault, and I am not happy.
Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the tips. I made the mistake of not involivng Itunes and RE3 before hitting Traktor.
My thought process is very similar to yours. I figured, okay, it doesn’t like me putting in comments in the ‘1’ field. Fine. I’ll simply let RE3 do its thing in ‘1’ and then I’ll add a comment to the ‘2’ field.
WRONG. Traktor over-wrote everything and I had to spend hours starting over again. Now, whenever I have tried to put anything into the comments 1 or 2 field, it has automatically overwritten ALL of my ID3 tag information. I’m left with the most basic of tags.
Not cool.
I checked the NI forums, and this is a common issue. The forum dwellers suggest setting up a user account on Windows that does not allow Traktor to overwrite/make changes to files without administrative permission.
Here’s the forum that addresses it, and a site that supposedly shows how to fix it. I have not tried it yet, because I have not had time to test it.
For now, when I have time to mix, I am doing so without Traktor.

ParticipantIf you used Mixed in Key then it will add the intial Key as well as the BPM to the file so that Traktor Pro can read it.There’s already a field for it, you just have to select it so you can see it.
Open Traktor. Switch to browser mode. Then at the top of the fields, right click (or press and hold if your’re using a Mac). You should see a long column with various column options (I’d take a picture, but I don’t know how to get a screen shot with my Mac yet) Select “Key” and that will open a new column that will display the intial key in it. No need to add anything to the comments. My apologies if that didn’t make any sense.

The Only problem with using the Key field is that if u switch over to Serato there is no Key field…so ur kinda hooped…I know this doesnt apply to a lot of people, but i often mix on different software depending on the situation…as 1/2 my friends use Serato or CDJs I have Keyfinder write it at the beginning of the file name as well as the comments field so no matter what medium i am playing on i always know what key my songs are in.
