ParticipantSince CDJ1000 has no MIDI you will need some cind of timecode system in order to use them.
Traktor scratch Duo or Traktor Scratch Pro or Serato Scratch Live
and use the Timecode CDs in the CDJ1000’s
The DJM800 has Midi so you will not really need an external soundcard.
Therfore Traktor without soundcard should bee a lot sheaper than SSL.//DJ Hessler

MemberDarren it’s a shame that the club doesn’t have CDJ 900 or 2000 because all those things you mention in terms of having your music organised etc can be done on Rekordbox which comes free from Pioneer so you don’t need to buy more software. You organise your set and track list on the laptop beforehand, then just use your laptop as your music source so the CDJs behave just as they would with a CD/USB etc so you don’t lose the “feel” that you mention.

ParticipantThanks for the advice I have downloaded the pioneer rekordbox software & I am starting to use it to organise my files. I think the next step for me is to look to purchase a set of Pioneer CDJ 350 or CDJ900 which will mean I can Dj wusing the USB

MemberNice one. Although before you spend money on CDJs, I would recommend that you download a free trial version of Traktor or Serato and just have a bit of a play around with it. You might find that it opens up a whole new world of features / effects and things you can do that can really enhance your DJing. That’s pretty much how I got into digital straight from vinyl. You will also be saving money, for the cost of a pair of “soon to be obsolete CDJ’s” you can have your pick of any top of the range controller and trust me you still get that “feeling” you were talking about when DJing , if not more with all the added creative options that software gives you. Just something to think about , good luck which ever path you go down and let us know how you get on.

Eros can you tell me why you think CDJs will soon be obsolete? The Pioneer CDJ 2000 is the industry standard throughout the world.

MemberI meant that in the sense that digital is the future. Just as CDJ took over from vinyl, digital will take over from CDJ.
More and more guys are now using controllers or “stop gaps” to make club equipment act as controllers. DJ Hessler was saying that he knows of clubs that have ditched CDJ’s all together !You only have to look to the fact that even “industry standard Pioneer” have brought out 4 controllers this year. Would they really bother if they thought the future was going to stay CDJ ? They held out a long time before getting into the controller game but even they have seen the writing on the wall. Coupled with the fact that they are rumoured to be upgrading RekordBox into a fully fledged DDJ software package to rival Traktor and Serato.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Pioneer..they make great products (with an equally great price tag:)) I think it’s good to have competition.

How many new DJ’s do you see picking up turntables? That combined with the fact that Tec 12’s are now out of production.

MemberMy point was that 11 or so years after the release of the first CDJ turntables are for from obsolete, and i think you will see the same thing with the CDJ. There will never be an industry standard for controllers, there cant be, there is just far to much choice of units and software. So IMHO your gonna see CDJs in every major nightclub for at least the next 15 years, they are still a viable choice.
