Is it me, or the new words for gear are "affordable" and "entry level"?

You could be right, although that DB2 is hardly affordable, even if it is a fraction of the price of the DB4…

Well that and the new interest everyone has in DJing thanks to the big names… like guetta or deadmau5 and i can see how a company can think, “well a teenager probably can’t swing an $800 controller… but I bet they’d like to try it out – how do we get THAT money?”

controllers meeting the market is not a bad thing. Im sure EVERYONE (yourself included) has more equipment than ever they would like to try.

I blame the dance music explosion. and the recession… But mostly the increased interest in the “DJ” scene.

I can understand why it would be smart to for a company to invest in new cheaper gear. The truth is DJing is a very easy solution for kids who can’t play the piano, or who can’t sing to do something with music. Most of the kids who buy the cheap controller are never going to take it to the next level, and maybe they don’t want to. DJing is a good way for kids to have a musical hobby, even if they’re never going to be playing clubs and the like. Plus, for someone like me, the cheap controller is an easy way for me to learn the basics and get a feel for DJing while I try to work up the money for a much nicer, more professional controller. Any way you look at it, it gives us poor DJ’s something to work with, and it gives kids a nice hobby that may turn into a career. Heck, I got a friend who bought one just to help him mix and add effects for his band. So all I got to say is, it’s a win win thing, the only downside I can see is companies investing less money into high end controllers.

Poor economy and recession are usually a big factor in counter culture. (Punk in early 80s, clubbing in late 80s / early 90s, and now… digital DJing?)

Maybe having less money around is encouraging the youth to get DIY about it? With the ERGO, you don’t even need any extra lighting rigs as people can just stare at the horrendous lights ont he controller.

I do not agree on this.

The high end stuff comes first then the low entery cheaper stuff IMO

It was not long ago Denon anounced their X1600/X600 MC6000 SC2000
And the S3700 and X1700 is still the best Media player and mixer on the planet IMO.
Not long ago Pio anounced DJM2000 CDJ2000 CDJ900 and 2 expencive controllers.
Not long ago Numark releced their NS6
Not long ago NI anounced S4
All pro stuff

Now Denon has a 2chan thing coming (if the picture is right)
Pio has their 2 new cheaper controllers
Numark has a new layout on Mixtrack pro and a lot of other stuff that I cannot keep record on
NI has a 2 channel controller (S2 if I remember it right)

So there it is.
First the Prostuff then the cheaper versions for the bedroom DJs

I will also add that it is not always expencive to buy the Pro stuff atleast not if you are a Pro DJ
You sometimes get what you pay for and I for one will gladly keep paying for the Pro gear.
I want to be sure that things work 100% so that I can consentrate on my music and not on how to work around lack of functions/broken gear!

I’m not complaining though. Since I am more a hobbyist I haven’t found a reason yet to ditch my Xponent for a new controller…but I’d definitely buy one of the $300-$500 controllers if I do move on.

I think the S4 is an awesome controller, but it’s too much money for what I’m doing in DJing. For others it might be ideal, but as I said, I wish all this existed when I started DJing back in 1992. It would have been easier to get started.

I can see why companys are investing in cheaprer gear.Alix have you ever heard the saying ”slow(some) money is better than no money”? Why push expensive equipment in a bad econeomy, and not sell that equipment versus something inexpensive that would sell easily? I have purchased a unit that is not as expensive, compared to some of the other controllers out there. I figured if Im using the inexpensive unit for gigs for now, I can save my money and purchase what I really want.

A repost of my blog comment as its relevant to this thread…

In the past what the big DJ’s were using is what the new starters aspired to. The big boys currently use CDJ 2000′s well out of the pocket for aspiring and even experienced users. Back in the day one could save up for technics and half decent mixer but saving for two CDJ2000′s in current economic climate is mission impossible.
As the new wave of DJ’s grow with the controllers that they can afford, I suspect we might see a flip in the game instead of tech filtering down, it will go up and become the norm and for that to happen the consolidation of the laptop and controller into an all in one unit will be crucial. I was thinking of getting a NI Kontrol S4, but I think I will wait it out now, next year by this time will be interesting – well worth a visit for BPM then I think.

My only reluctance on the “all in one with no laptop needed” thinking is that I like how with software we get choices and some levels of customization.

Pioneer tried to get rid of the laptop with the system they put into the CDJ-2000…but it never took off, probably because of price. Now they made traditional controllers.

Maybe I’m just strange, but I never had this disdain for the laptop that others have. I never saw it as a wall or obstacle disconnecting me from the crowd.
