MemberNope. Dont miss it at all, my memory has gone to rats and half the time when crate digging i couldnt remember what a choon was
Online i can pre listen before i buy.
Of course with crate digging and buying cheap 50p vinyl’s in bulk there was always the unexpected bonus of buying a gem you never knew the ID of until u got home and span it
But that still happens for me digitally with youtube and so forth

ParticipantI don’t miss having to shop at the retails shops—online buying is just so much more convenient. I do hope bookstores stick around, though—in spite of reading a lot of books on my iPad these days, there’s nothing like serendipitous browsing for real books.

That would be awesome… don’t think it’ll happen around my area though. That, and the convenience, cause me to shop online.

ParticipantConvenience of on-line shopping is great! But I’m still old school audiophile and like the links, artwork, about the artist and sometimes lyrics that you get with a full album and the hard copy of the disk itself for retrieval at any time in case your computer dies or worse.

MemberI don’t know why people keep saying that the record store is dead, I went record-diving just yesterday (found some odd compilation CD with singles from Tip Records <3 ), and whilst, sure, the place might not be crawling with DJs (most of their visitors are hipsters or audiophiles), the place is going pretty strong, and they have a *huge* amount of Vinyl… I can only lament that I do not own a turntable :c

ParticipantThere’s been a report on how vinyl sales spiked recently, but it’s been more “hipsters” and others feeling “retro”.

Nonetheless, the stores are there, and they provide a great way of finding music you maybe wouldn’t have listened to otherwise, and unlike online store, the staff (usually) knows a lot of their stuff.

ParticipantI’m not denying it…but amongst DJs the biggest complaint I’ve heard about the “death of the record store” is that loss of the “community” aspect.
For me, I use blogs to find new stuff I should check out. Especially trance music I just read blogs, listen to samples, and listen to sets from my fave DJs.
However, I do wonder at times if a “hangout” with the means to buy MP3s, coffee, etc…would work.

MemberI do miss shopping at record stores for a number of reasons. There’s nothing better than walking home with a bag full of hot tunes, anticipating throwing them on the decks.
The main advantage of record shops though, was the guys behind the counter. Find the right shop with the right assistants and you had an immediate filter between all the records out there and your taste. In a really good store, they would even anticipate their customer’s arival by bagging up records that matched the customers taste in advance of their weekly visit.
On the flip of this, I have also seen a lot of bullshit go on in record shops, mainly caused by the ego’s of the idiots behind the counter that had forgotten that the shop was in business to sell records and alienating / humiliating your customers is not in line with that purpose. Probably why some well known record shops have changed hands so many times……

ParticipantI’ve seen both ends of that.
I liked when guys like Andy Moy or Oscar MacMillion of Gramaphone would show me new tunes. They would be excited about it all and even after a while understood my tastes. So I’d get “Alex, check out #4 on my wall”
I think that’s why I like the blogs now. It reminds me of that.

I will admit I had some fun times hanging out in stores, but often times my recent memories were more of frantically rushing to a store on a Thursday or Friday night to try and get some of the limited copies of things before they ran out. Even the social aspect I felt wasn’t there, as many were rushing in, buying stuff, and then rushing off to play whatever gigs they have later.
I’ll admit I like online shopping…my comfort and convenience. Some though have suggested stores with kiosks or USB tablets where people can hang, have a coffee, chat, listen to stuff, hear suggestions from employees (who are also DJs), have guest DJs come in to play, and thus make it a hangout/shop for DJs to buy digital music.
Do you prefer the live in-person aspect of the classic record store? Or shopping online in your comfortable spot?
I Definitely Miss the Death Of The Record Store (or at least the Independant Stores);
The Memories of the Days and Days I spent in this particular store; where DJ’s would Mingle (but Unfortunately Not Communicate – All About The Business You See); and the ‘Rush’ to the Counter to Buy The Track the Owner had just put on the Deck; brings back a Warmth that is Not Existant Any More With The Online Store;
The Online Stores are Magical Of Course as they have ‘Just About Everything’; and of course it is Wonderful to be able to Peruse now at Our Leisure (with a cup of coffee or whatever) in Our Own Home (in Our Pyjamas); and be able to find that Absolute Gem for that Particular Set; that is Cool;
But; a Hangout (sort of) for DJ’s where a Community Aspect could be Accomplished would be Great 🙂August 24, 2011 at 4:57 pm #6280Haroon
ParticipantI think when I was younger it was one thing, I had less responsibilities in life and spending the best part of a day crate digging was do able back then. But now I’m too old for that, I prefer getting my DJ tunes online. I also think that some stores they did have very snobby assistants and they wont be missed at all – at one stage I just preferred to shop from HMV get what I wanted and back out again no pfaff and one of the local DJ’s worked there always gave me a discount, so much for the indy stores lol. I’d only go to a store now to pick up a vinyl lp of a band that I like, but this is becoming rarer because I now stream albums on spotify so not making it worth buying really.

MemberDo you not think that, in general, the community spirit has gone from a lot of places? Not just record stores, everywhere. Its just that you feel it in your immediate surroundings now.
I went proper record shopping the other day in london down at sister rays. I enjoyed myself, but couldnt help feeling the ego’s of some people. Got shoved out the way by some guy while browsing. Scrabbled through the records, listened to a few through some nackered techs with crappy headphones and got outta there.
The same goes for clubs, I dont feel any community spirit when I got out clubbing. Do you? Was there that spirit of things back in the day?
August 24, 2011 at 9:07 pm #6291D-Jam
ParticipantBack in the day there was some sense of community. Rave culture was and always is a very communal thinking. Modern club culture though has become narcissistic and all about “me me me me me”.
Sorry you had that experience Howitzer.

MemberYou guys are goin’ to the wrong clubs if that that’s your experiences 😉
