Well once I saw a dude whose workflow is: play an entire song (no matter if it’s a 20-minute remix), play the deck B song right after the song on deck A finishes (no matter if the deck A song has a fade out, he waits for the end..) plus he was jumping from dubstep to pop and from minimal to almost ska music all the time.. But I learned a lot from him: what not to do.

MemberMost of the DJs in Arena, Exeter. And Rococos. In fact, most of the clubs in Exeter.
You’d think their mixers looked like this:

MemberOne time at a hip hop event, I DJ’ed the songs for some local hip hop artists – this lasted a while and after they were done they had a different DJ come up to play the last two hours. Now he had roadcases, a full serato setup – plugged in to the mixer and I was telling him that the mixing board is touchy… to which he says, “Do I look like an amateur?”. I thought alright true enough… anyway through his set he kept pushing into the red and clipping the speakers but acted like nothing was wrong! I went up and told him (on the way off chance that he didn’t hear it) but he ignored me. Eventually the bar owner went up and turned down the master volume. Other than that he was playing a hip hop set, but just starting one song at it’s very start, spoken word intros be damned!

Memberlol. this sounds a bit messed up but one of the big motivation factors that pushed me to actually pursue the idea of DJ was the following: I was at a club and the house room DJ wasn’t really catching my attention. So I went to the Top 40 Room.
I was there for 10 mins….Tops.
This guy was leaving gaps between songs, played maybe 30 seconds of songs before going on to a next one, and would jump from One by Swedish House Mafia to Danza Kuduro by Don Omar. I was so mad!! THESE ARE SONGS I LOVE AND HE’S TAKING A POOP ON THEM!!!
After leaving the club I couldn’t stop thinking “Man, I could have done a totally better job than that guy.” So I went online, started looking at what DJing really is about, and since then fell in love with the art behind it.

Exact same thing happened to me

Memberand on the flip side, you appreciate DJ’s that really have worked at their skills, even if they’re style of music isn’t the same as yours. my friends are huge into the tech house and deep house. not my style, but seeing them work makes me want to be the best that I can.

ParticipantI never saw a “consistently bad” DJ, but I do remember the first time the big club in Chicago brought out the Crystal Method to play as DJs. They got drunk and trainwrecked like crazy…but people loved them because they were Crystal Method.
For all the guys who complain about kids on laptops stealing music, pressing sync, and undercutting pro DJs…I more get unnerved by big name headliners who can’t DJ to save their lives, but put out some big release that made them famous…and the supposed “musically minded” will love them the way Apple fanboys will love Steve Jobs no matter what he does.
I also remember going to a teen club to see my buddy play, and Playboy DJ Colleen Shannon was there. I came on the stage behind her to say hi to some colleagues, and I saw she really wasn’t even mixing, just sloppily fading one track into the next while showing off her tight body in a skimpy skinsuit. I found photos on the promoter’s site:

MemberIt lloks to me like she (the DJ above) could have just played the ‘Fluff On The Needle’ all night and people would still be ‘Screaming For More’ – Screaming For Her To Take Her Top Off in Essence – but How is that DJ’ing ?
If you have to look like a Tramp/Hooker to get a Gig; but then people actually Pay You; well; You are the Winner and the Crowd are Fools; and I bet she is Laughing all the way to Ann Summers for her next Outfit;July 1, 2011 at 12:22 am #2147D-Jam
ParticipantHer DJing was nonexistent. She wasn’t matching beats or even trying to make things work. She was more or less a gogo dancer in the DJ booth. Eye candy.
When I came on stage to say hi to colleagues, she did a “blend”. I looked at my colleagues with a “WTF?” look on my face. My colleagues laughed simply because they knew she was just eye candy there.
She knows how to operate the gear, but not how to DJ. I’m sure it’s all just to slap the Playboy name to clubs. It is an affront to female DJs who try to build the talent and rep.
Oh well. It’s a popularity game like I said in the guide.

MemberI’ve never, in my entire life, gone to see a DJ (or a band). I’ve gone to hear a few, mind.

The How to Succeed at DJing series. I tend to call it “the guide” because it started off as a long post I put on DJForums.com.
I think that’s even how I met Phil.

I still have the Complete series in my Favourites 🙂July 1, 2011 at 2:47 am #2166Adam Sharizman
Participanti’ve never seen a crappy DJ. Maybe a DJ who can’t read the crowd but he was pretty new to the gig. But DJs who can barely beatmatch or skips songs and all are non existant. The clubs/bars here are pretty choosey at picking DJs
