Updated with even more music genres, Ishkur’s Guide To Electronic Music is a massive online map of electronic dance music styles complete with timelines. There are now over 160 genres with full write-ups as well as over 16,000 tracks that you can listen to to get a sampling of each musical style.
It looks like a huge subway map (imagine the Tokyo subway, but several magnitudes more complex) which you’re able to zoom in and out of. Each genre is clickable, and you’re able to listen to track samples that the creator feels are representative of that particular music style.
It’s an awe-inspiring effort and a chance to trace the roots of and to understand the evolution of contemporary dance music. More importantly, it’s a great way to familiarise yourself with musical styles you’ve only read about (or have probably not even heard of) thanks to the track samples available for each genre. One for the crate diggers, music history lovers and DJ/producers looking for fresh inspiration from the past.
