Club DJ Tips & Tricks: How To Record Your Set From The Club’s Mixer

Here's how to record your performances using the club mixer's output.

The easiest way to record your DJ set is hitting “record” in your DJ software. But sometimes, you want to record the entire evening, not just your set (or you’re DJing with music from streaming sources, which means your record button on your software will be disabled).

If you’ve plugged your controller into a club’s mixer, there’s a great trick that means you’ll always be doing this properly and get a perfect recording.

You’ll need something to record on (a TRRS-to-TRS cable plus a TRS to RCA cable will let you record on any phone with a headphone/microphone 1/8″ jack input, or with a suitable adaptor, using the phone’s voice recorder app – or you can use a proprietary solution like Mixbox to record on your phone, to give two examples), but you’ll also know the right place to plug in.

In this video, I talk you through how it’s done, and show you how to do it on a couple of club mixers – as well as an example of a mixer where you can’t do this. (Note: nearly all DJ controllers DON’T have this option, either.)
