DJ Skill Sessions #40: How To Play The Macarena (& Get Away With It)

Check out how DJ Carlo Atendido uses song selection and simple scratch and FX tricks to add freshness to a cheesy, overplayed track.

In this DJ Skill Sessions video, DJ Carlo Atendido takes on the challenge of building a routine around dropping one of the most celebrated / most maligned tunes of all time: the Macarena. It’s a textbook example of using simple yet clever scratches and bundling a cheesy throwback with newer tracks to give it a contemporary edge. You probably still won’t get a nod from the music snobs in the crowd, but it makes for great little routine to execute at weddings and house parties (and other DJs just might appreciate the effort!).

What do you think of this routine? How do you handle requests for cheesy songs? Do you play them? If so, how do you fit them into your set? If not, how do you avoid requests? Let us know in the comments.
